Finding the Right Matting Agent for UV-cured Coatings

Image of Media Callout

With significant advantages in processing and curing speed, radiation-cured coatings—also known as ultraviolet (UV)-cured coatings—are more popular than ever. A study from BCC Research estimates that the radiation-cured coatings market will grow by 9.6% annually until 2028. Many manufacturers looking to reduce the carbon footprint of solvent-based coatings are turning to UV-cured systems because they contain low or no Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) and can achieve fast curing and excellent durability.

But, achieving a natural finish—which requires a low gloss additive for a 100% UV-cured coating—can be challenging for many reasons. For instance, viscosities tend to increase in 100% UV systems. In addition, matting agents may cause application and manufacturing issues, like reduced scratch and mar resistance and poor clarity. Selecting the right matting agent is critical for achieving the desired finished product, but not all matting agents are created equal.

Premium Matting Agents for UV-Cured Coatings

SYLOID® RAD matting agents are specifically formulated for radiation-cured coatings. Developed by Grace’s silica experts, the SYLOID® RAD silica series uses specialized surface chemistry to achieve high matting efficiency and low gloss levels without compromising performance. By combining particle engineering with specific organic treatments, SYLOID® RAD silica series enables gloss reduction while overcoming challenges in mechanical performance, clarity and processing conditions.

Coatings made with SYLOID® RAD 2105 offer:

  • Excellent clarity
  • High consistency
  • Easy application

But what about extremely low-gloss coatings? Natural wood finishes are becoming more and more popular among consumers; how can you achieve a very flat appearance without causing thickening and a loss of mechanical properties?

Achieving a Lower Gloss with SYLOID® RAD 2111

Introducing SYLOID® RAD 2111, our newest matting agent for UV-cured coatings. Designed to offer even higher matting efficiency than SYLOID® RAD 2105, it helps you achieve a natural, low-gloss finish without increasing the viscosity of the coating. Building on the advantages of SYLOID® RAD 2105, SYLOID® RAD 2111 offers additional benefits due to the larger particle size, including:

  • Superior matting efficiency
  • Optimal gloss/sheen ratio
  • Lower viscosity impact, offering more flexibility for formulators
  • Improved anti-settling properties
  • Minimal chemical resistance impact
  • Improved mechanical properties compared to other matting agents

And the best part? SYLOID® RAD 2105 and 2111 use the same specialized chemistry, which means they are designed to work together. You can blend them to optimize the performance and appearance, saving time on development and testing, and allowing formulators to “dial in” the desired gloss level.
