Consistently and confidently achieve glycidyl esters (GEs) regulatory standards while maximizing your refinery's productivity
For refiners of edible and specialty oils, compliance with strict regulatory standards is paramount -- total glycidol concentrations in some parts of the world are limited to below 1.0ppm for adult consumption and 0.5ppm for infant consumption. GEs are process induced contaminants suspected of being carcinogenic and mutagenic. They are formed at elevated temperatures during the refining process and must be removed prior to consumption.
However, current mitigation methods can be costly, inefficient and often miss compliance targets. Introducing TRISYL® XGE catalyst, Grace’s latest promoted silica technology, engineered to reduce GEs below regulatory limits, with no compromise to oil quality or organoleptic properties.

Benefits of TRISYL® XGE Catalyst for GE reduction Compared to Alternative Methods
-
TRISYL® XGE catalyst was evaluated for use in both triglyceride and ethyl ester types of consumable oils. GEs are present in all refined oils, but palm and marine oils are more likely to have GEs form at higher levels during the refining process.
-
Glycidyl esters are process induced contaminants that are formed during the refining process and are suspected to be carcinogenic and mutagenic. Currently, EU Regulation 2023/915 sets maximum levels of total glycidol in various consumable oils.

There are a variety of options – the process will depend on your specific refinery configuration. Typically, TRISYL® XGE catalyst is used after the deodorization step. Once the oil is refined, bleached, and deodorized, it is passed through a packed bed of TRISYL® XGE to reduce GEs. No further post-refining is required for GE removal.

Grace has dedicated technical customer service (TCS) teams in all regions of the world with the ability to provide in-person support for pilot trials, commissioning of new commercial units, troubleshooting and more. Our team can also provide support during the annual change out of the catalyst, which is usually completed during other preventative maintenance or turnarounds. We partner with engineering firms around the world that can provide a range of support to help you successfully implement the technology.
