TRISYL® Silica for Edible Oil Refining
TRISYL® silica is a synthetic amorphous micronized silica used for refining and processing of edible oils and fats to help improve quality and stability, and to reduce neutral oil losses.
In the refining of edible oils and fats, TRISYL® silicas remove naturally-contained and process-induced contaminants like soaps, phospholipids, and trace metals to ensure food safety and help improve quality and stability. TRISYL® silicas are used in the refining of:
- Corn Oil
- Sunflower Oil
- Palm Oil
- Canola Oil
- Soybean Oil
- Fish Oil
- Tallow
- Other Specialty Oils
Along with the ability to adsorb polar impurities and contaminants, TRISYL® silicas helps to reduce costs by:
- Simplifying the refining process
- Minimizing refining process’ environmental footprint by reducing process water requirements
Positive impacts on sustainability are achieved by reducing the process water needed after primary centrifuges. Other TRISYL® silica benefits include:
- Reduction of spent filter cake to dispose of in the environment
- High adsorption capacity for phospholipids
- Removal of trace metals and their associated soaps
When used in post-treatment refining processes, TRISYL® silica helps to:
- Remove colloidal nickel and nickel soaps in hydrogenation
- Remove soaps generated in chemical interesterification
Helping to Deliver Healthier Solutions
Grace has worked with a leading global agribusiness and food company to supply TRISYL® 150IE silica, for use in a novel enzymatic interesterification technology to process edible oils. This new technology is a healthier and more efficient alternative to partial hydrogenation. Based on immobilizing enzymes, it produces no trans fats, requires fewer processing steps, occurs naturally at a lower, energy-saving temperature, and improves the stability of vegetable oil.
Grace welcomes relationships with key companies and engineering houses to develop tailor-made solutions for the edible oil industry.
