LUDOX® COLLOIDAL SILICA

Grace® LUDOX® colloidal silica is an effective binder and carrier for catalytic materials. LUDOX® colloidal silica provides the following benefits:

          • Excellent inorganic binding properties
          • Inert in most chemical systems
          • Stable at normal reaction temperatures
          • High specific surface area enhances catalytic activity

LUDOX® colloidal silica is also useful to prepare catalysts for cracking and disproportionating hydrocarbons. A catalyst with higher concentrations of alumina can be prepared by simultaneously precipitating alumina and gelling the colloidal silica to form a product of any desired alumina to silica ratio. LUDOX® HS and AS colloidal silica are the grades normally used for this application.

​SYLOPOL® Silica Supports​

The SYLOPOL® family of Silica Supports is a portfolio of silicas in particle form that are used by polyolefin manufacturers as carriers for catalytic compounds critical to manufacturing Polyethylene.  In this application, the silica acts as more than a carrier of catalytic agents but also as an active participant in the polymerization process.  Grace's offering of specific silicas can have a profound effect on the overall performance and economics of a catalyst system and final properties of the finished polymer.  Surface area and pore volume play an integral role in catalyst design, and can be independently controlled during the gel manufacturing process, resulting in various combinations of SA and PV.  The size and shape of silica supports have a major effect on controlling the final polymer size and morphology, as well as the productivity of the resulting polymerization catalyst.
